It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything really worthwhile on this blog. Then again, it’s been a long time since there’s been any worthwhile Nokia news. And so, after a four-month hiatus, it’s time again to look at one of Nokia’s latest phones: the oft-rumored N9.

When we last left Nokia, the company had announced that it would be going the way of the Windows Phone, in what was probably one of the biggest deals between two of the largest tech companies out there. Nokia’s two last platforms – Symbian and MeeGo – were going to be jettisoned, in the hope that moving to Windows would give Nokia the flexibility to innovate both software and hardware. Symbian had, more or less, become a dying platform, and MeeGo wasn’t living up to its expectations as a savior for the company:

Months later, Oistämö still struggles to hold back tears. “MeeGo had been the collective hope of the company,” he says, “and we’d come to the conclusion that the emperor had no clothes. It’s not a nice thing.”

But the release of the N9 proves that maybe, just maybe, MeeGo isn’t completely done for.

Let’s start with the specs. Nokia isn’t pulling any punches here with the N9 (which honestly looks like an iPod Nano mixed with an N8), a candy bar that sports a 3.9-inch AMOLED display, 8 megapixel camera (featuring Carl Zeiss optics), HD video recording, Gorilla glass, and NFC support. It runs MeeGo 1.2. It also looks (granted, this is from the promo video) smooth as hell, with an interface that looks, for once, slightly ahead of the curve.

Gone are the Home buttons (hardware or software) of yesteryear. Nokia’s touting the simplicity of the N9 over everything, in that all it takes is just a simple swipe. Swipe to scroll, swipe to move through your home screens, and even swipe to minimize your applications. And speaking of the home screens, you’ve got three of them here: your application launcher, your multitask view (similar to the N900′s), and finally, your notification page which shows missed calls and social media updates.

Everything about the N9 looks impressive – too impressive, maybe. What’s Nokia’s doing here? They’ve cast aside MeeGo for Windows Phone, but put the spotlight back with a hell of a device. I don’t quite get it. But I have to hand it to Nokia: the first release candidate of MeeGo (1.1) looked nothing like this. I’m amazed that it got this far.

Unfortunately, there’s no talk about price or availability (yet), other than the generic “The Nokia N9 is scheduled to be in stores later this year, with availability and local pricing to be announced closer to the sales start.”

The New York Times/Reuters report that Apple now has a range of iPods addressing the full spectrum of the digital music player market, from its US$99 iPod Shuffle player to its US$449 iPod photo model with a color screen.

California-based Apple unveiled a new ``iPod mini'' that holds 6 gigabytes of music -- or about 1,500 songs -- and will sell for about US$250, while it cut the price of its 4 gigabyte or 1,000-song model, introduced about one year ago, to about US$200.

According to the NYT., the company said the 4 gigabyte model's US$200 price, down from its previous price of about US$250, will appeal more broadly to consumers. The new mini also has improved battery life of up to 18 hours.

But, the paper says Some analysts have expressed concern that with an increasing percentage of total sales coming from iPod sales, it could hurt Apple's profit margins because the iPods are less profitable than its signature Macintosh computers.

But others have said overall margins should remain steady, helped by declining component costs. In Apple's most recent quarter, sales of the iPod, songs from its iTunes online music store and iPod accessories accounted for 40 percent of total sales.

Apple also introduced an "iPod photo" model with 30 gigabytes of memory at around US$350, and offered an add-on that allows users to transfer pictures from a digital camera directly into the music player, which has a color screen.

Apple is the No. 1 seller of portable digital music players -- often called MP3 players -- that allow users to carry thousand of songs on a device smaller than a wallet. According to Banc of America Securities, Apple's share of the MP3 player market rose to 40.2 percent in the December quarter, up from 37.5 percent in the September quarter.

While Apple doubled its market share in the last year to about 60 percent from about 30 percent, according to market research firm NPD Group, the market is becoming ever more crowded and competitive, according to Apple executive and reported by the NYT.Apple also debuted an iPod Camera Connector, to sell for about US$30, that transfers digital photographs from a camera to the iPod.

Logitech unveiled its new VX Nano cordless laser mouse which builds on the foundation laid down by the original VX Revolution notebook mouse (including the MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel), but now features a more slim and trim design low-profile design.

The mouse also now uses two AAA batteries instead of one AA battery like the VX Revolution.

The most appealing element at this mouse is the new "nano-receiver" included in the packing. Instead of sticking out at least an inch from the side of a notebook like traditional USB receivers, the nano-receiver protrudes by only 8mm. The receiver, however, still uses 2.4GHz cordless technology

instead of Bluetooth.

"More and more laptop users are abandoning the touch pad in favor of a cordless notebook mouse," said Logitech's Rory Dooley. "However, with most notebook mice, the size of the receiver forces people to plug and unplug the receiver each time they use the laptop. Toshiba has announced the realease of Tecra A8-EZ8511 and Tecra A6-EZ6411, two new budget-minded laptops

Toshiba designed the Tecra A8-EZ8511 with high quality and reliable mobile technologies to move you beyond the desktop, whether at school or at the office.

Toshiba Tecra A8-EZ8511 has 15.4-inch widescreen (1280×800) and comes with Intel Celeron M 430 processor at 1.73GHz, 512MB of DDR2 533MHz SDRAM, a 60GB SATA HDD (5400rpm) and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with up to 256MB of shared graphics memory.

How to Operate Multiple Computers With One Keyboard and Monitor

Operate two (or more) computers from one location without the need for duplicating a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Determine which method works best for you. Hardware and software based solutions are available. Read on to help figure out which is best for your personal situation.
A software based solution will require that each computer under control has a network connection. The network can be a LAN if it will be controlled locally only, or an internet connection if it will need to be controlled from any computer in the world with an internet connection.
Obtain software and service for your computers. One such provider is LogMeIn. They have several levels of service ranging from free for "simple remote control" (LogMeInFree) to the more robust "full service" offerings (such as LogMeInPro) but has a monthly fee of about US$20 per computer. The LogMeIn service in general works very well, but like any network based solution, is best when connected by high speed LAN or broadband internet between the computers. Select the service level that best meets your needs, create an account and download / install the software.

A second software based option is the open source solution called "synergy" this works across operating systems, when simply trying to control several computers locally with one keyboard and mouse, a "soft" KVM switch if you will.
A hardware based solution can be achieved with a "KVM Switch" KVM is an acronym for "Keyboard, Video, Mouse". These devices typically have connections for multiple Video inputs from the computers and a single output to connect to a monitor. There are also multiple PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard outputs to connect to the computers and two inputs for connecting both a keyboard and a mouse. Newer KVM switches have transitioned from PS/2 and round Keyboard connectors to the popular USB ports instead. Be sure to obtain a KVM that supports the style Keyboard and Mouse connectors the computer uses or obtain adapters. Due to limitations on the length of cable that KVM (and USB for that matter) signals can travel, all the computers will probably have to be located fairly close (within 10 feet or so of the KVM hardware) unless some other repeater or extender hardware is employed.

From Dell’s webcast that took place last month, and Digital Nomads who provided us some answers on Twitter, we learned about a new laptop model that reaches 19 hours of battery life, which is quite impressive, taking into account the fact that average battery life of a laptop is of around 5 hours. It’s the Dell Latitude E6400, a notebook integrating a Solid State Drive, and the Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chip, while the power comes from a 9-cell primary battery and a 12-cell slice battery. To help reaching this level, Dell notebook come with a special power management software called ControlPoint with the All Day Battery mode, the latter in charge with cutting the power for specific features and hardware parts, to maintain battery power.

Which laptop has the longest battery life? HP is another company focused on bringing the latest technologies to its customers and on satisfying their needs, including operating life of notebooks. Yesterday, the company announced breaking the 24-hour battery life with the new HP EliteBook 6930p model that uses a ultra-high capacity battery model to keep your system up all day long.

“All-day computing has been the holy grail of notebook computing,” said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager, Notebook Global Business Unit, HP. “With the HP EliteBook 6930p, customers no longer have to worry about their notebook battery running out before their work day is over.”

Clevo, a Taiwanese OEM notebook company, has introduced its M860TU and M570TU gaming laptops at the ongoing 2008 CeBIT show in Germany.

The Clevo M860TU features a 15.4-inch display with a resolution of 1900-by-1200 pixels and Intel’s “new generation” of chipset, processor, and wireless connection, most likely as parts of the upcoming “Montevina” Centrino 2 mobile platform. There are also the Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX 512MB video card, a HDMI output, e-SATA port, HSDPA 3.5G mobile broadband support, a built-in web camera, and a fingerprint reader accompanied by the Trusted Platform Module.

The 17-inch Clevo M570TU is similar to the M860TU, but it additionally provides a TV tuner and a high-definition (”Blu-ray/HD-DVD”) optical drive. On the other side, the 17-incher lacks HSDPA connectivity. According to NotebookReview’s report, the M570TU’s motherboard supports Nvidia’s next-generation GeForce 9800M-GTX video card.

One of the features on my phone I use regularly is the music player. The N82 is a more than capable in this regard. Normally I listen to the music via my car stereo, linking the N82 to the stereo with a simple 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead. Recently I changed jobs and sold my car, I no longer need a vehicle and I've made the lifestyle choice to use public transport more. Traveling to work on the train, I find I now use headphones to listen to the music. (I wish more people would, I don't need to hear the latest noise that the youngsters are listening to, being distorted at full volume from the tiny speakers on the latest mid-range prepay phone!)

I am not an audiophile, so I am usually satisfied with the supplied headphones that come with the phone, and that is the case with the N82. I like the convenience they offer, what with the built in controls and microphone, makes taking calls so much easier. I also take advantage of the multiple formats the N82 supports. By compressing the music files, I have much more space to store more songs. I have an 8GB card in my phone, I have more than 300 songs stored and the space used is still less than 800MB. As I said, I am not an audiophile, and the converted tracks sound fine to me. Conversion is easily done using the Nokia Music uploader found in the PC suite. It's worth keeping in mind that it can take a while to convert and transfer songs when they are done in large number.

Another music feature I've started to use more often these days is the radio. I like to listen to the radio on the way to work, to keep up to date with the latest news. The radio feature works well, and it is easy to cycle through the selected radio stations using the remote commands on the Nokia headset. Reception is usually very good with just occasional signal loss.

The N82 performs very well as a music player, and I certainly don't miss an iPod. The memory capacity is used to maximum effect when the songs have been converted and the battery life easily lasts a day on heavy usage (calls, text, web, GPS and music) and two on lighter usage.

New iMac a tempting Apple

Apple has dropped "Computer" from its name, but its computer business is still growing, even if the iPod player is the company's real star.

Apple's resurgence started with the first iMac, in 1998. Little by little, Apple has been persuading people to opt for Macintosh computers over Windows PCs.

After Apple refreshed its iMac line last week, I decided to test one from the perspective of a Windows user. I found it to be a powerful if not completely irresistible enticement to switch.

If you haven't looked at iMacs in a while, they now look like half a laptop - the display half, with the processor and other components built into the flat-panel screen.

The new iMacs ditch the plasticky look that's been a hallmark of the line since the beginning, replacing it with an aluminum casing that's even thinner than before.

It's very sleek-looking, but do you remember the first iMacs? They resembled colorful television sets and looked more fun than a pack of bubble gum. Then there was a special edition with a transparent gray cover, through which you could see the copper coils on the back of the cathode-ray tube. That was hot.

With the latest models, the iMac has grown up, gone to business school and now wears a suit - a very well-cut suit. It won't look out of place anywhere, but it's not as exciting.

The basic model costs $A1698 and has a 20-inch screen. Another $A451 gives you a faster processor and graphics card and a bigger hard drive. The top model, for $3339, has all those components but a 24-inch screen instead. All have one gigabyte of memory. The prices are roughly $A300 to $A400 less than the previous line, for the same size screen.

I tested the middle model, but with an extra gigabyte of memory, which costs $A220. When I removed the extra memory, I didn't find a difference in how fast the unit started up, switched between programs or rendered a high-definition movie in iMovie.

That tells me that most users will probably be fine with the cheapest model and the standard 1 GB of memory, because processor speed is not that important anymore. Apple's operating system clearly makes good use of memory; Microsoft's new Windows Vista will barely give you the time of day on 1 GB.

I found the iMac very easy to get working on, even though I haven't used a Mac intensively for some time. Getting online through my home wireless network using the built-in Wi-Fi card was a cinch, as was video chatting using the built-in camera and my AOL Instant Messenger account. The iMac's iTunes software immediately found the iTunes music library on my home PC and gave me access to the songs.

Agreement – This Cardholder agreement as varied from time to time.
Available Balance – The value of funds loaded onto your Card and available for use.
Card – The Virgin Prepaid MasterCard® issued to you under this Agreement. Also referred to as the Virgin Prepaid Card in these Terms and Conditions.
Card Number – The 16 digit number on the front of your Card.
Cardholder – You, the person entering into this Agreement with us.
Customer Services – The contact centre for dealing with queries about your Card. Contact details for Customer Services can be found in paragraph 21. Calls to Customer Services are charged at local rate.
e-money – The electronic money associated with your Card.
Full Deductible Amount – The full transaction amount, including the Transaction itself along with any associated fees, charges and taxes.
MasterCard® International Incorporated - MasterCard® International Incorporated whose head office is at 2000 Purchase Street, Purchase, New York 10577 USA.
Merchant – A retailer, or any other person, firm or corporation that accepts Cards which display the MasterCard® acceptance mark.
Prepaid Account Number – This is your unique personal account number, and is found on the back of your Card.
PayPoint – A retail network provider of cash collection services displaying the PayPoint logo.
PIN – Your four digit personal identification number for use with the Card.
Restricted Card – A card with spending limits. Please see paragraph 3.4 for details.
Transaction – A retail sale, a cash advance, cashback or a cash machine withdrawal completed by you using your Card.

2. SCOPE OF THIS AGREEMENT

2.1 Your Card is an e-money prepaid card. This is not a credit, charge or debit card.
2.2 Your Card has been issued on our behalf by Clydesdale Bank PLC in accordance with a licence from MasterCard® International Incorporated or its affiliates. Your rights and obligations relating to the use of this Card are subject to this Agreement between you and us; you have no rights against Clydesdale Bank PLC or MasterCard® International Incorporated or their respective affiliates. If you experience any difficulties in using the Card you should contact Customer Services. The e-money associated with this Card is provided to you by us, and will be in Pounds Sterling. In the unlikely event that we become insolvent, the e-money on your Card may lose its value and become unusable, and accordingly you may lose your e-money. The Card remains the property of Clydesdale Bank PLC.
2.3 These terms and conditions are written and available only in English and we undertake to communicate with you in English regarding any aspect of your Card or Account.

3. BUYING, RECEIVING AND ACTIVATING YOUR CARD

3.1 The Card application fee is outlined at paragraph 12 of these terms and conditions.
3.2 You may only apply for a Card if you are resident in the UK, and you may hold up to five Cards per household at any one time. As the applicant you are responsible for all additional Cards issued under this agreement and any fees or charges that these Cards may incur.
3.3 We will issue your Card to you on the basis of the information that you have provided. You agree to provide accurate personal information and to tell us of any changes as soon as possible so that our records remain correct. You should update any changes to your personal information by visiting the Website or calling Customer Services. In particular, you should always keep us informed of changes to your email address.
3.4 If we are unable to satisfactorily verify your identity and address from information provided by you at the time you apply for a Card we will issue you with a Restricted Card. There is a total spending limit of £1,600 per year (12 months starting on first Transaction) on Restricted Cards of which no more than £600 can be ATM withdrawals or a single debit transaction. You are unable to top up a Restricted Card using a credit or debit card. If, after applying for a Card, you are issued with a Restricted Card, you will have the option to upgrade to a non-Restricted Card by providing satisfactory documentation as proof of identity and address (fees apply, see paragraph 12).
3.5 Your Card will be posted to your home address, and will be loaded with any initial value you credited to your Card when you applied for it, less the Card application fee set out in paragraph 12. You should receive your Card within 15 days of your application.
3.6 When you receive your Card, you must sign it immediately, and then call Customer Services to activate it. When you call Customer Services you will need to select the 'Card Activation’ option from the menu. You’ll then be asked to quote your Card Number and the activation code which you’ll find on the letter that came with your Card. You’ll also be asked to provide us with some details to confirm your identity.
3.7 You may use your Card to make cash withdrawals, subject to 3.4. You’ll need a PIN for cashback or cash machine withdrawals and to authorise any retail sales transactions in the UK and in some countries abroad.
3.8 You’ll be given your PIN when you activate your Card. You should never reveal your PIN to anybody. We will not reveal your PIN to a third party. If you forget your PIN you can reset it by contacting Customer Services.
3.9 When you select or change your PIN, you must not select a PIN that may be easily guessed, such as a number that:
3.9.1 is easily associated with you, such as your telephone number or birth date,
3.9.2 is part of data imprinted on the Card,
3.9.3 consists of the same digits or a sequence of running digits, or
3.9.4 is identical to a previously selected PIN.

4. USING YOUR CARD

4.1 Your Card can be used at any Merchant (fees apply, see paragraph 12).
4.2 Subject to 3.4 Virgin Prepaid Cards can be used to make withdrawals at cash machines bearing the MasterCard logo® or at participating banks to make cash advance withdrawals (fees apply, see paragraph 12). You can withdraw up to £250 a day but some Merchants or cash machines may have lower limits. Please note that extra cash machine fees in addition to those shown in paragraph 12 may be charged by certain cash machine providers.
4.3 Your Card is a prepaid card, which means that the Card’s Available Balance will be reduced by the full amount of each Transaction and authorisation (see explanations in 4.5.1 to 4.5.5 of the different circumstances in which requests for authorisation might take place), plus any applicable taxes and charges, including any additional cash machine charge if any. This is your ‘Full Deductible Amount’, which must be less than or equal to the Available Balance on your Card. You must not use your Card after the expiry date of the Card or if the Full Deductible Amount exceeds the Available Balance. If, for any reason, a Transaction is processed for an amount greater than the Available Balance on your Card, you must repay us the amount by which the Full Deductible Amount exceeds your Available Balance within 14 days of receiving an invoice from us. Should you not repay this amount within 14 days of receiving an invoice from us we reserve the right to take all steps necessary, including legal action, to recover any monies outstanding.
4.4 You can check your balance for free by visiting the Website. You can also check your balance by calling Customer Services.
4.5 Due to security safeguards, Merchants that accept your Card are required to seek authorisation from us for all of the Transactions that you make. There are some circumstances where Merchants may require you to have an Available Balance greater than the value of the Transaction you wish to make. You will only be charged for the actual and final value of the Transaction you make. Merchants request this as they may need to access more funds than you initially planned to spend. For example:
4.5.1 Hotels and rental cars – As Merchants may not be able to accurately predict how much your final bill will be, they may request an authorisation for funds greater than your Available Balance.
4.5.2 Restaurants – You will need to have an Available Balance equivalent to the total cost of the meal plus 20%. This is to accommodate any service charge that could be added to your bill.
4.5.3 Internet Merchants – Certain internet merchant sites will, on registration or at checkout stage, send a request for payment authorisation to verify if funds are available. This will temporarily impact your Available Balance. Also, please bear in mind that many sites won’t deduct payment until goods are dispatched so please be aware of this when checking your balance to make sure you’ve always got funds available to cover your purchases. We will decline any authorisation requests from merchants using your Card for identification purposes.
4.5.4 In-flight purchases – Merchants may not be able to authorise your Transaction if they can’t obtain an online authorisation from us. Examples include on-board cruise or train charges and some in-flight purchases.
4.5.5 Membership or subscriptions – Please ensure you’ve always sufficient Available Balance on your Card if using it for recurring charges, like memberships or subscriptions.
4.6 Your Card cannot be used at self service petrol pumps. You can use your Card to pay by taking it to the cashier.
4.7 Your Card should not be used as a form of identification.
4.8 The Available Balance on your Account will not earn any interest.
4.9 We may ask you to surrender the Card at anytime for a valid reason in accordance with the provisions in paragraph 16 of these terms and conditions. If we do so, we will give you back your e-money in accordance with paragraph 7 of these terms and conditions.

5. TOPPING UP YOUR CARD

5.1 You may top up your Card(s) up to a maximum balance of £3,500 per Account, providing the total balance of all Cards in your household does not exceed £4,500 at any time. (If you have a restricted card, please refer to paragraph 3.4)
5.2 You can top up your Card in the following ways:
5.2.1 Within any Post Office® branch, PayPoint outlet or any retailer participating in the 360money top up scheme. Locations can be found on the Website. You’ll need to hand over your Card and your payment to the value you wish to top up. Your Card will either be swiped or scanned and the top-up completed. Remember to get your receipt as this is your proof of purchase. The maximum each time you top up is £500; the minimum you can top up by is £5 at a Post Office® and £10 at a PayPoint. Please note that top-ups made at the Post Office® will take one business day to reach your Account. Fees apply for top-ups made at PayPoint locations, please see paragraph 12.
5.2.2 Using a 360money e-voucher. These can be purchased from PayPoint outlets. The maximum 360money e-voucher top-up at any one PayPoint outlet is £100 and the minimum is £10.
5.2.3 By cheque, subject to a minimum value of £20, by writing your Virgin Prepaid Account Number and the cheque guarantee number of the cheque signatory on the back of the cheque and sending it to Customer Services. Your funds will be available between 3 to 5 days from the funds clearing in our bank account. Please note, cheques must be made out to Virgin Money Direct Deposit; we will not accept cheques made out to any other name.
5.2.4 Direct debit, standing order or bank transfer mandate. Forms and instructions are available on the Website. In certain circumstances we may ask you for identification for transfers above £600 before we apply the money to your account. Top ups may take up to 4 business days to be available on your card (once cleared in our account).
5.2.5 You can top up your Card online using a debit or a credit card, a minimum top up of £20 applies. Only one debit or credit card can be used to top up your Account. You must have registered your debit or credit card with your bank for 'MasterCard® Secure Code' or 'Verified by Visa' to use this service. If you change details of your debit or credit card we may ask for additional time to approve your top-up. The address of the debit or credit cardholder must match the address given when your Virgin Prepaid Card was purchased. Credit / debit card top-ups may take up to 3 business days to be available on your card. Fees apply for top-ups made using a credit card, see paragraph 12.
5.3 If you have a Restricted Card you cannot top up using a credit card or debit card.
5.4 We reserve the right to suspend or terminate the right to top up your Card at any time without notice.

Last week, hours after Apple Computer rolled out its newest iPod model, the Nano, in California, Sony unveiled what it hopes will be an iPod-killer in Tokyo.

Sony introduced its answer to the iPod last week in Tokyo.

The line of sleek new digital music devices bear the venerable Walkman name, but sport such iPod-like features as tiny display screens, disk-controlled menus and internal memory able to store up to 13,000 songs in the high-end model.

Sony makes no secret of its desire to reclaim eventually the global dominance of portable music players, a market it created in 1979 with the first Walkman cassette players. But it has its work cut out, analysts say, because it has let Apple get such a formidable head start.

Sony has set an ambitious goal of selling 4.5 million of the new Walkmans worldwide in the fiscal year ending next March. That is more than five times the number of older versions of the Walkman it sold last fiscal year, but still a far cry from the 6.2 million iPods that Apple sold in the three months through June.

"It's just the first step" in Sony's counterattack, Koichiro Tsujino, the co-president of the unit making the Walkman, told reporters last week.

They will go on sale in Japan on Nov. 19, and later in the United States and elsewhere.

Sony says it is committed to selling them in all major world markets. But analysts say the staggered timing of the rollouts appears to reflect a strategy by Sony to use its home-court advantage in Japan, one of the world's largest and most competitive markets, to hone its products and strategies before taking the fight to other countries.

"They want to make sure they capture Japan first," said John Yang, an electronics company analyst at the Tokyo office of Standard & Poor's. "Sony is not in such a hurry to market this overseas."

Analysts say Sony, like many big electronics companies, was late in seeing the potential of digital formats like MP3. Apple got out front early, releasing its first iPod four years ago. It was not until last year that Sony produced similar players.

While Apple's lead makes it hard to catch, analysts point out that Sony brings deep pockets, excellent research and development, and one of the best names in consumer electronics. In a sign of early success, a flash-memory version of the Walkman released in April briefly outsold its cheaper iPod counterpart.

According to BCN, a Japanese market data company, Apple still held a commanding 39.4 percent share of the Japanese market for portable music players in August. That is down from a peak of 48.5 percent in March, before Sony's April rollout. In August, Sony remained a distant second with a 16.5 percent share, but was up from 6.1 percent in March, according to BCN.

While estimates vary, analysts say that Japan is either the second- or third-largest market in the world for portable music players, accounting for about 5 percent to 10 percent of the global market. Gartner, a research company based in the United States, says 40 million players were sold worldwide last year.

Japan has long been a nearly impenetrable market for foreigners, especially in industries like consumer electronics, where Japanese companies have been globally dominant. Partly, this reflects Japan's finicky consumers, who insist on products that are higher quality and more complex than those most Americans would find at local stores.

The demanding nature of the Japanese consumer, though, makes this an important test market. Many in the industry say that if a product can sell in Japan, it can sell anywhere.

"Japan is an extremely important market," said Michael McGuire, a Gartner analyst. "You are in the epicenter of the whole digital device industry, and the backyard of the companies that invented the industry."

Since it went on sale here in November 2001, the iPod has been a runaway success, analysts say. The machines have struck a chord among the nation's youth, who seem enamored with things small and cute. The iPod name also appeals to this brand-crazy country.

Apple does not give out Japan sales data. But iPods are ubiquitous in Tokyo's coffee shops and famously crowded trains. When Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's largest business daily, ran twin articles on the front page about last Thursday's release of the iPod Nano and the Walkman A-Series, it played the iPod article more prominently.

Hoping to capitalize on this beachhead, Apple introduced its iTunes online music service in Japan on Aug. 4. The company said that it sold more than a million songs in the first four days, more than all other online music sites in Japan combined sell in a month. That includes Sony's Connect online music site, which offers fewer songs than iTunes. Apple also has four retail stores in Japan.

Analysts say Sony took its first real stab at Apple in July of last year, when it introduced Walkmans featuring hard-disk drives like those already on iPods. But Sony's models did not easily play MP3 files, the most common format for digital music, favoring Sony's own Atrac format instead. They also did not support popular software like Microsoft's Windows Media formats.

Sony has fixed those problems. The new line of Walkmans will work smoothly with MP3 and Atrac, Sony says, and a software upgrade scheduled to be available in December will allow the machines to support Windows Media.

They also offer unique software features. The Walkman will track which songs are most frequently played to build a list of the owner's 100 favorites, which it constantly updates. It also has an Artist Link function that can make "recommendations" of bands and songs similar to those stored on the player.

The new Walkmans will offer comparable storage and performance to iPods, Sony says. Their prices, however, will be higher. The two-gigabyte flash-memory version will sell in Japan for about 32,000 yen, or $290, compared with 21,800 yen for a similar iPod.

But analysts say Sony's biggest challenge will be overcoming iPod's head start.

"Sony has a chance to catch iPod, but the hurdles are high," said Hiroshi Takada, an electronics analyst in Tokyo for J. P. Morgan.

Buying a laptop is not the easiest purchase. And it's a pricey one. Chances are you'll be bombarded by a salesperson intent on selling you a huge machine, with flashy features, using jargon like "WLAN", "DDR2-667 SO-Dimm Memory", SATA, plus they'll no doubt promise the notebook will even make you coffee. There's one consideration more important than any other when considering what to buy: simply think what you'll be using the laptop for.

If you're going to be typing documents, updating spreadsheets and checking e-mail, you're not going to need a R20 000 machine. However, if you want your laptop to replace your desktop, you're probably going to want to look at a high-end machine with lots of multimedia functionality.

Having used four different laptops in the past few years, here are ten important considerations when choosing a machine:

1. Battery-life

This is the number one specification to consider. Simple. No matter how fast your machine is, what it can do, how many buttons it has, it's useless if you can't use it without a power source. Having had the experience of using a monster of a laptop while travelling, it becomes incredibly impractical when the battery life of your computer is less than an hour. The higher the battery life, the better. Find out what the battery life for a machine is specified at before you buy it, and then quiz sales staff about the actual battery life. The dimmer your screen, the longer your battery will last. Also check your "power options" configuration, and you may be able to squeeze as much as five hours of productivity out of your laptop.

2. Weight and size

The bigger the laptop, the more of an effort it's going to be to lug it around. Having stumbled across a "portable" machine bigger than two normal-sized laptops at a computer store last weekend, bigger is definitely not better. It doesn't matter how huge your screen is or how many extra features it has, it's not worth it; unless you only intend to be semi-portable.

3. PC or Mac

This is becoming a more important consideration, especially with Apple's move across to machines powered by Intel processors. This allows you to run both Apple's Mac OS X (Leopard) operating system as well as Windows XP or Vista. This is particularly useful as you get the benefits (and cool factor) of using a Mac, but can actually do things like connect to your office network, play PC-based games, etc. Bear in mind that the pricing of MacBooks starts at around R11 000 (for the "plain" MacBook) and extends to way over R20 000 for the top-of-the-range MacBook Pros. Mac's traditionally need different software, but are incredibly easy to use, especially for multimedia-related tasks (editing video, pictures, etc,).

4. Hard drive capacity, CPU and memory

While you might be satisfied with your massive 320GB hard drive in your home PC, the level of storage offered on laptops will be far less (expect around 60GB). In terms of speed, your central processing unit (CPU) together with your RAM (random access memory) will determine how fast your laptop is.

For memory, 1GB of RAM is considered the bare minimum these days; don't fall into the trap of buying a machine with anything less than that. The new Windows (Vista) requires at least 1GB to run, but most experts suggest you have at least 2GB. You'll also want a CD/DVD writer to allow you to write important files to disc and perhaps make copies of some of your music CDs, etc(for personal use only of course!). New top-of-the-range notebooks come with built-in Blu-ray DVD players. This is the step up from the standard DVD format: it stores double the data, plus is backwards compatible (it plays normal DVDs and CDs).

5. Connectivity

Two connectivity features come standard on laptops these days: an Ethernet port (commonly called a network port) which allows you to connect to a home or office network, and USB slots which offer a way to connect peripherals or extras to your machine, like a mouse, camera, memory stick, printer, etc. (MacBooks offer Firewire slots, which are a much faster type of USB connection). Some notebooks offer a WLAN (wireless network "port") or a Bluetooth connection. Built-in wireless would allow you to connect to an access point in an office, for example, without tethering yourself to your network port. The more connectivity options the better.

6. Navigation device

Most laptops come with a built-in touch pad; however Lenovo (the old IBM) notebooks offer a pointing stick (the little red button in the middle of the keyboard). The pointing stick needs getting used to, but it's more efficient than a usual touch pad. Mac calls its navigation device "trackpad", and this differs from a standard touch pad because you're able to scroll with two fingers on the pad. You can tap and drag, pinch windows and drag items around on screen using this.

7. Operating system

If possible (this is a long stretch), get your laptop to be preinstalled with Windows XP. Even though Windows Vista is newer, and Microsoft hate people saying this, there are no massive upgrades or changes in Vista. In addition, a lot of tasks have become that much more difficult (and buggy) to do. Windows XP is robust, stable and just works.

8. Software

Microsoft Office 2007 is a big jump from any previous version of Office. The menus and functions have changed completely, but apparently the changes are intuitive and well-worth the upgrade. Depending on what you use your laptop for you may need other specialist software.

9. Warranty

Try get your warranty extended by as long as possible. Warranty extensions are available on most notebooks, and the pricing structure is tiered accordingly. It won't be worth it to upgrade beyond 30 months, as you'll most likely buy a new machine before three years are up.

10. Bells and whistles

There are a number of flashy additions available on notebooks, from an integrated near-cinema quality speaker system to external video connections, built-in webcams or remote controls for watching DVDs. Make the call on this; you might find something like a remote control useful?

Below is a listing of what to look for when looking at the software included with a computer. Does the software include Microsoft Office or Corel Suite? These packages allow you to have a word processor and/or a spread sheet. For the majority of all users, this should be an important consideration. Is the software full versions of the software or is the software demo programs or shareware programs?
Support	While you can always contact computer hope for support, manufacturer support for most users will be a very important consideration as if an issue arises with the computer you must be able to contact a support representative. Warranty can cause frustrations for most users; we highly recommend that a computer only be considered if it has at least a one-year warranty. Many cheap computers will only come with a 90 day warranty. Meaning if a part goes bad, you will have to pay for the part as well as the service. There's never been a laptop as skinny as the new MacBook Air from Apple. At its thinnest, it measures just about four millimeters.

"When you first see MacBook Air, it's hard to believe it's a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display," gushed Apple CEO Steve Jobs while presenting the new laptop at the keynote speech of the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. "But it is."

The excitement at the Moscone Centre was also sparked in typically reserved observers like Michael Gartenberg, research director at the US market research firm Jupiter Research: "This will become the object of lust for all tech fans this year," Gartenberg said.

In advance of the MacWorld Expo, the chatter on many websites was focused on a potential combination of the iPhone and a normal laptop - more or less a retooling of the "Newton" PDA concept that Apple phased out 10 years ago. The MacBook Air is instead a full-value laptop with a robust aluminium casing with a 13-inch display and a full sized keyboard.

During his presentation, Steve Jobs compared the MacBook Air, which costs about $1,700, with the Vaio TZ series from Sony.

"The thinnest part of the Vaio is the thickest part of the MacBook Air," the Apple CEO told the cheering crowd. What he didn't mention in his comparison is that unlike the MacBook Air, the Sony laptops come with a DVD burner, a modem, and an integrated UMTS module.

With an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 1.6 or 1.8 gigahertz (GHz) of processing power, Apple has certainly sent its new laptop out into the world with a significantly stronger CPU than the Japanese devices against which it is competing.

The standard model contains a 1.8 inch hard drive offering 80 gigabytes (GB) of storage space. Users willing to hand out another $900 can upgrade to a 64 GB Flash hard drive. Flash memory works more quickly than a hard drive and consumes less power. The battery in the MacBook Air lasts five hours when working with a traditional hard drive.

The second major MacWorld Expo announcement centred on a second attempt at the "digital home" market, as well as launching an online video rental service. To facilitate all of this entertainment, Apple introduced an improved version of its "Apple TV" TV set-top box. It will enable HD video films to be rented from the Internet without having to connect with a computer.

Steve Jobs gained the support of all significant Hollywood studios for the "iTunes Video Rentals" platform. In the US, DVD-quality films will cost $3 or $4 for a rental limited to 30 days. High definition (HD) films will cost $1 extra.

To date, there has been a number of Apple iPod models. Well, with the release of the new iPod Video, there are now officially three iPod models for the 5th generation of iPods (shipping from August 05 onwards). The earlier 4th generation models, including the popular iPod Mini, iPod Photo, U2 and 20GB iPod are now officially history.

The three official 5G iPod models include the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod Video. What's the difference between this new range of iPods and the previous 4G models? Broadly speaking, the differences are:

Hard Disk
Two of the new iPod models, iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, are based on flash hard disk technology. This new hard disk is ultra slim and is able to withstand shock and vigorous movement. Unlike 4G models, this make the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano ultra slim and allow them to be used for vigorous activities, including sporting activity, dance, accidental drops, etc. Previous 4G models were less robust and vigorous activity tend to cause possible malfunction.

Battery life
Battery life on the 5G iPod has improved tremendously. One of the major complaints about 4G iPod was the short battery life(8hrs) and battery life draining away quickly after heavy use. The new iPod lasts up to 14 hrs and has a better battery lifespan.

Color is standard
Unlike 4G model, where the iPod Photo model was the only model with color, the new iPod Nano and iPod Video comes standard with color screen and playback.

Choice of video
With the new iPod Video, there is now a range of activities, including data, music, photo and video that can be supported on one iPod. Previously, video was not available as an option.

Standardized casing
The 4G iPod included the multi-color iPod mini, with a choice of pink, blue, green and silver. The only option for black was the U2 model.

Today, the colors has been standardized to black or white (except iPod Shuffle - White only). In addition, all iPod casing has been standardized to hard acrylic instead of the anionized aluminium for iPod Mini and hard acrylic for the other models.

Compact Clickwheel
The iPod Clickwheel was previously a scroll wheel that was designed and supplied by a 3rd party. The new iPod clickwheels are now designed and produced by Apple itself. The functionalities are similar but users reported better response feedback.

Headphone jacks for all iPod models, including the very first 1G iPod up till the 4G models, has always been on top of the iPod. The iPod Nano breaks ground by having the headphone jack at the bottom.

As of this writing, the iPod Video has only been out for less than 2 weeks. File system redirection

This makes the local file system available on the remote desktop within a terminal session. Printer redirection

If you are using Personal Firewall or NAT in a home environment, you can use Remote Assistance without any special configurations. However, if you have a corporate-like firewall in a home environment, the same restrictions apply: you would need to open Port 3389 in order to use Remote Assistance.
